I see this body, I feel my heart If anybody has to start Then it’s me My parents moved to the river on the West coast 4000 feet with views of only trees And I have a brother but haven’t spoken to him lately But he’s on my mind, all the time, and I hope to god he’s doing fine I spent the whole last summer in a dark room With the radio up high to drown out all the silence When you’re still young I guess you can afford to Still support your own ideals with concrete beams and faulty logic I quoted the poet everyday And used his words to delay Doing what I said I would do With my coat on I drive away Headlights on they illuminate The road I’ve avoided so many times Well is it true that life moves on in cycles? Cause if it were that wouldn’t sound too absurd Because I often feel like I’m back at a starting line And everything, that I have here, is impermanent (yet still perfect) And who’s standard’s should we live by? Our family’s, our community’s, our nationality’s, or our own? I quoted the poet everyday And used his words to delay Doing what I said I would do With my coat on I drive away Headlights on they illuminate The road I’ve avoided so many times

I used to wake up at eight everyday Now I don’t even know what the morning is So I’m in the basement just searching for any old thing That reminds me of whom I used to be Cause I grew real tired of holding that post Wandering on like some kind of ghost Maybe that’s when I’ll want it most But it feels like I’ll never know I meet so many new faces that I can’t keep track And friend’s I’ve made are just scattered all over the map I know the next place that I come to call home Will be the last in a very long road Cause I grew real tired of holding that post Wandering on like some kind of ghost But maybe that’s when I’ll want it most But it feels like I’ll never know

Making my way through the tall grass The wind’s rustling through my hair The smell of the sea rises up through the air I settle down, find a place to rest Wade into the shallow cove I’m half way in when I notice a boat Don’t try to wake me up, please don’t wake me up I haven’t had enough, I haven’t had enough I look around and there’s no one there So I make my way to the stern I climb right in like it was my turn I swing side to side on that floating bed With nothing but blue above Evading conversations about blood and lust Well it’s soon winter in Montreal The cross just stands so bare and tall The trick-or-treaters move inside It’s been a very good night, it’s been a very good night Don’t try to wake me up, please don’t wake me up I haven’t had enough, I haven’t had enough

I got my reasons, they’re tied to the seasons I’m kind of down but that’s just today I know the message, however impressive I feel like a ship, man. Sinking on a wave An honest friend and a breath of air Makes me question if she was even there at all Seen this view like a million times Coloured hue by my somber eyes... It’s all just purple Light me up Calm me down I get so anxious in these big crowds Is it the insignificance? Or is it what she meant to me? Is it the indifference? Is there something else that I don’t see? (Terrell Verse) Light me up Calm me down I get so anxious in these big crowds Is it the insignificance? Or is it what she meant to me? Is it the indifference? Is there something else that I don’t see?

It was just the other day when I had a dream about an old friend named Catey On the shoulder of a highway, we had nothing on our backs I must have told a good joke, cause I remember her laugh But we just kept on talking as the cars went whizzing by I don’t think that a day goes by, where we are not left wanting for more Well we can steal some objects, it don’t matter if we do And we can steal some ideas, as long as they ring true The world can forgive but we seldom forget our own crimes And I think that’s why... I’m starting to see how life is nothing but poetry and the means to the light I just can’t find the right words to use to tell others how I feel about these common place issues I just keep hashing things out and then throwing them away I don’t know if I know anything but if there’s one thing I’ll say It’s ”get ready for a revolution because it’s coming soon!” I know time talks since the truth keeps Re-directing my priorities and my questions Almost everyday but I’m happy to say, I'm happy to say That I’m starting to see how life is nothing but poetry and the means to the light

about

Side | Side is the debut EP of Birches, a collaborative project centred around the songwriting of Josh Spencer.

Side | Side is a collection of songs that speak of ambivalence: the colliding messages, thoughts, and interactions, which make us sway back and forth and slowly shape the people that we are.
